Functional ware must work for its intended purpose, which demands a number of features. Overall weight must be kept low, for ease in lifting. Any handles must be comfortable and the piece must balance well in the hand, even when filled with whatever goes inside. Pitchers must pour without drips and mugs must be comfortable against the mouth – they must “drink good” as another potter once put it.
